What Kind Of Job Is A Busboy?

By George Dodson

Eating out can be fun. You get to select from an array of eateries where you want to go according to what you feel like eating. The waiters welcome you with open arms and wait to serve you the best way they can. You can ask for a glass of water or a napkin or two; they stand by waiting for your request. Once you have relished your food and you are ready to leave, you get your belongings, tip the server and leave. Your journey is about to conclude. One person?s journey, however, is only just commencing. By ?someone?, I am referring to the busboy who makes the booth pleasant for the next customer after the previous customer leaves.

On average, in restaurants, diners and other eateries, irrespective of their size, it is mandatory to have staff equipped to clear the tables after someone has been there, prepare the table for the next customer, and be of assistance to the wait staff if necessary.

Busboys are not usual in America. Some offer to serve customers snacks and beverages even before the customer takes the initiative to do so. They will serve food if duty calls for it.

Bussers usually are not paid very well. It is the tips that they look forward to every day.

Those in average restaurants carry boxes stacked with dishes in tower-like fashion. In upscale restaurants, dishes are carried one by one. Time is required for this as the busboy has to be careful and meticulous in carrying each plate.

There is an abundance of renowned people who were employed in this vocation before their careers took off.

Al Pacino was a bus boy at a time. This was eons before he struck gold as an actor.

Alec Baldwin ?bussed? at a restaurant in New York.

Vietnamese president Ho Chi Minh was a ?busser? at Boston?s Parker House Hotel.

Jon Stewart was a ?busser? at a Mexican eatery.

Johnny Depp too was one at a point. Johnny Depp was also a busboy.

When you are eating out next, remember that the cleanliness of your table and the area as a whole is the result of hours of work put in by busboys employed there. They make their living off tips so a generous amount left by you will be of great use to them. Besides, there is always a chance that if they become famous someday, they will recall your kindness.
