Pikmin 3 & How Internet Marketing May Come In

By Rob Sutter

The Wii U is easily one of the most controversial topics in gaming right now and the sales of it cannot be denied. They haven't been tremendous and I think that Nintendo has overshot just how much it would be able to sell from the get-go. Pikmin 3 is on the horizon in America, though, so is it possible that this Nintendo IP can help the console along? It's very possible that the game itself can have an impact right alongside the subject of Internet marketing.

Those who only know about Nintendo on the most casual basis will probably hear about Pikmin and scratch their heads in wonder. It's possible that they do not know much about it, if anything at all, but I think that this goes to show just how clear Nintendo's image truly is. Mario and Zelda are arguably the company's two greatest names and Pikmin is one which falls relatively low on the Nintendo tier. This does not mean that it doesn't have a clear audience, though.

In fact, there has been something of a cult following that has been able to get into this action strategy series that has perhaps one of the most nonthreatening aesthetics in gaming history. This is where Nintendo is able to thrive; it doesn't rely so much on creating real-life experiences as it does constantly diving into fantasy. Can the company itself stand to create more mature experiences for its audience? I think that it can but this isn't the series for it.

If it were up to me, I would try to advertise Pikmin 3 utilizing Internet marketing efforts which are most fitting. By this, I mean utilize efforts that will be able to appeal to a younger demographic as well as one which has a childish mindset. After all, Nintendo has never been one to stick to one type of audience, no matter how much you hear about the contrary. Firms like fishbat will be able to tell you how important knowing the demographic is.

Pikmin 3 has done surprisingly well on the Wii U in Japan, which gives me hope for the time it is finally released in America. Overseas, though, it has sold well over the past weekend, showcasing its effectiveness in selling marginally better than the first Pikmin game a number of years back. Keep in mind that the sales can be higher, seeing as how only retail purchases were tallied and not downloadable versions. This may prove to be the first-party boost needed in order to help the Wii U into the future.
