How A Social Marketing Coach May View Affleck Situation

By Robert Sutter

It's apparent that there has been quite a bit of debate on the topic of Ben Affleck being cast as Batman. I don't think that anyone can argue that the comic book-loving crowd is one of the most intense and it's clear that they were not happy about this casting choice. I have to wonder, though, whether or not the concerns of the fans are going to be founded ones? Judging by the knowledge that a social marketing coach has, I think that there are a few factors to consider.

If you want evidence, keep in mind that people have actually been petitioning to have Affleck booted off the project. In fact, nearly 70,000 individuals have signed it, stating that they do not believe the actor can play such a threatening and dynamic superhero. It's definitely a topic for discussion but it is one that can bring a great deal of debate to life as well. Why do I say this, you may wonder? Well, you have to look at the past to see another Batman actor who's been looked at with scrutiny initially.

While many Batman fans view Michael Keaton as a strong actor for Bruce Wayne, it wasn't always that way. In fact, it was a similar case to Affleck as many fans petitioned to have Keaton booted out of the Tim Burton films. They did not think that the same man who made a presence in "Mr. Mom" could have ever made the transition into a darker, edgier character, especially ones that comic book fans held in high regard. It was a situation in which fans were forced to eat crow.

I think that this is true and one of the reasons for this is because I know that initial reactions are not concrete. You have to take into account that everyone is able to make assessments right off of the bat and mine was not very different from those that others had. That being said, any social marketing coach can tell you that such reactions do not translate to the final verdict. More time is needed, as authorities such as S-M-M-C will be able to support.

I believe that everyone is going to be wondering, at least until the release of the Man of Steel sequel in 2015, whether or not Affleck will prove people wrong. I think that he has the potential to play a good Batman but to say that he will be able to bring all of the fans of the caped crusader on his side is stretching it. He may be an effective actor, of course, but can he fit the shoes of one of the most important superheroes ever? We will have to wait until 2015 to see.
