Colleges are starting their semesters all around Idaho Falls again and the first week can be pretty exciting. It can also extremely daunting when all of the classroom information is thrown at you. The stressful thing is actually understanding the whole class and especially the important things that really matter. So our real goal is to be able to scan documents like a lawyer and pull out pertinent information.
1. Do the Reading This really all depends on the format of the class. You can talk to your professor on the first day of class or figure it out as you go. Some classes it is best to skim the reading before and come to class with a good idea of the topic. Other classes will require you to completely read the chapter, and some classes it is best to do the reading after lecture to jog your memory of the discussion. Whatever the case may be you need to find out the best methods for the class and read the text.
2. Sleep the Night Before Funny that this on the list but after having gone through college with roommates staying up till two in the morning I understand the consequences. Make sure to get a good night's sleep so you can pay attention in class.
3. Choose Your Tools There are a variety of different tools and techniques for note taking and it really comes down to personal preference. Some possible methods include:
Fourth- Take notes because everyone knows that writing, thinking and reading are all interrelated.
The Creative This is where marketers really stand out. They have creative abilities like an art major but enough business savvy to know how to benefit their organization financially. There are many different avenues to pursue on the creative track including product developer, web designer, art director, ad campaign director.
Sixth-Visualization is key in reading. We constantly connect words to things that are tangible so the world of literature is not just a complete mystery. If you can visualize what is being written it will always help solidify the words in your mind.
Skip writing unimportant words like and or the and instead come up with symbols or shorthand in order to go more quickly. For example I use the symbol w/o whenever I need to write without. Come up with your own list or search online for some useful shorthand.
4. Think, don't just record The purpose of note taking is not to have every word your professor speaks tucked away for later use. A machine such as a personal recorder can do that much better than you can (some people actually prefer to record lectures to listen to them later). In college whether it is for an Associates or a Masters you are required to think.
So when you are in class analyze and realize what constitutes important information and what is just filler. Write down what you need to know. It is also helpful to write your information down in outline format. This will allow you to write more succinctly and organize your thoughts so they are more navigable.
Tenth- Learn to enjoy it. It is often said that the things we enjoy are what we do well. Now it may be that we do them well be cause we enjoy them but it is also true that if we learn to do something well that we will enjoy it more. There is an equal cause and effect relationship. So when you start going to any of the colleges in Idaho Falls, remember than understanding things you read may take a few steps but will save you a boatload of time.
